Kernel issues after upgrading FC4 to FC6

Hi,

I've recently upgraded my FC4 to FC6 and started seeing the following errors during the boot:

Aplying Intel CPU microcode update: FATAL: Module microcode not found.
/etc/rc5.d/500microcode_ctl: microcode device /dev/cpu/microcode doesn't exist?

FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2849.fc6/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device

Also, I've noticed that my /var/log/boot.log is empty (so I had to take a picture of my screen to copy the error messages).

Does anyone know about this kind of issue, related to the upgrade? (I mean, I did not had the error messages before). Also, I've read that I should (or could) upgrade my kernel from i586 to i686 to fix this. However, I'm not sure about what would be the appropriate kernel for "Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz" ?

$ rpm -q kernel --qf '%{ARCH}\n'
i586

$ uname -a
Linux tomita 2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 #1 SMP Fri Nov 10 12:36:14 EST 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Finally, I've noticed that the kernel is SMP now. I also read that the "ht" flag in /proc/cpuinfo (which is appearing) would indicate that it is a HT processor. However, I believe I bought a non-HT processor. Is this info ok?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Rodrigo

For intel P4 you should be using the generic i386 kernel or the standard i686 kernel. You can install either via YUM.

(Last I knew this was not destructive to the old kernel, and you can go back to it from the GRUB menue.)

How do you know you bought a non-HT processor?

If you "upgraded" to FC6 (as opposed to installing from scratch), then you may be experiencing inadequacies in the upgrade process and should consider backing up your data and installing from scratch.

To understand fedora better, see www.mjmwired.net FC6 installation notes.

Hi,

I've uninstalled the i586 kernel from my system and installed the i686 kernel using yum (if anyone else is trying to do the same, it's a good idea to check the grub.conf file before booting the system When I unstalled the kernel, it removed the entry from there and installing the new one did not add it back).

The processor error messages are gone. Although the boot.log file is still empty (still working on it).

I believe I bough a non-HT processor because when I bough my PC, I remember that a computer with similar configuration and a HT processor was significantly more expensive. Anyway, I've been told that some non-HT P4 processors show the ht flag. When I do a uname -a, it shows a SMP processor but cat /proc/cpuinfo shows only one processor (which I believe it's ok )

Thanks,

Rodrigo
