kernel I/O errors

I keep getting kernel I/O error reports in my system mail. Every time I write to or read from a floppy, cd or dvd I get a bunch of errors like this:
Code:

--------------------- Kernel Begin ------------------------

 WARNING:  Kernel Errors Present
    Buffer I/O error on device fd0, l...:  13 Time(s)
    end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector...:  70 Time(s)

 ---------------------- Kernel End -------------------------

Is this a problem with the current kernel version, didn't I configure my system right, is it a hardware problem (on 3 drives??) or is something else the matter?

I recently discovered I did not have DMA enabled on my cdrom and dvd drives, but the error messages persist.

Updated the kernel to 2.6.13-1.1526_FC4 but still get the same errors, also after enableing DMA on cdrom devices:
Code:

--------------------- Kernel Begin ------------------------

 WARNING:  Kernel Errors Present
      Error: Not ready -- (S...:  11 Time(s)
    Buffer I/O error on device fd0, l...:  53 Time(s)
    Buffer I/O error on device hdd, l...:  10 Time(s)
    end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector...:  74 Time(s)
    end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector...:  186 Time(s)

 ---------------------- Kernel End -------------------------

I have now established usb thumb drive generates the same error reports.

This really can't be normal (or is it?)

Any ideas as to what may cause it and how to prevent it?
