KDE Up and Running, but just a blue screen
 

I'm running Fedora and have both GNOME and KDE. I just ran yum update and everything seemed to work fine. Updated my kernel to 1833, updated KDE (but didn't take note of any version #s).

First thing I noticed wrong was my boot menu was hidden. OK I commented out the hiddenmenu command. Menu back.

Booted using new kernel screen resolution set to 800x640 and couldn't be increased. Tried previous kernel; same thing. No problem, edited Xorg.conf and now I set my resolution to 1025x768.

GNOME and terminal work fine, but KDE no worky. When I try to use KDE, everything looks great, KDE says its up and running and then all I have is a blue screen with black default cursor (arrow). Cursor responds when I move the mouse.

It's annoying, like Windows annoying.

Any ideas?

Did you really set your resolution to 1025x768, or is that just a typo?

Have you tried looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log ? There may be some useful warning or information messages (then again, there may not). If you can figure out which version of KDE you are now running that might also help.

I did look at /var/log/Xorg/0/log and found nothing useful. Since GNOME was working, my kids could still play Runescape and this wasn't an emergency.

For other's future reference, here's what I ended up doing:

1. Ran 'yum list kde*'.
2. Wrote down a copy of everything installed on my machine (there
were KDE 3.4.X and KDE 3.5.1 copies of most, but not all,
files). I don't know if this was the problem as I expect not
every file needs to get upgraded.
3. Ran 'yum remove kde*' to clean everything off my machine.
4. Ran 'yum install XXX', where XXX is the name of each of the
files from step 2.

There may have been a simple config file tweak, but this was a fairly painless and reasonably quick solution.
