Hello
The k3b don't reconize my cd writer. The device it's hdc, and I make scsi emulation in grub hdc=ide-scsi. If I do cdrecord -scanbus in console the device appears as cd writer but to the k3b, my two devices (one R and one RW) are both just CdRom-R.
What I can do?
I discovered that if I use the kernel 2.6.5, I have no problems with k3b, and don't need scsi emulation.
the problem is when I upgrade the kernel to 2.6.8-1.521 kernel.
But I still don't understand why the problem with 2.6.8-1.521 kernel...?
For some reason K3B and kernel 2.6.8 don't work together, seems there is something broken in the ATAPI burning of 2.6.8. I downgraded back to 2.6.7xx can't remember but it was the last kernel before the upgrade to 2.6.8 and K3B and the cd burner work with no problems, K3B recognizes the writer.
Actually I'm in front of the same problem that my CD-RW/DVD combi drive isn't recognized as cd writer - when started as normal user.
If I start k3b as "root" user I get the "Set writer speed" dialog at the first time. I get it again when deleting the file /root/.kde/share/config/k3brc.
This doesn't work for normal users.
Start K3B as root, then under one of the menues there should be a selection Setup K3B, click this and set your usual user up, then you should be able to burn a CD as a regular user.

One small remark, their really is no setup needed in Linux 2.6
