jre1.6.0_10-x86_64 install as a Firefox plugin ??

FC 8 X86_64 .
Downloaded and installed jre1.6.0_10-x86_64 , it is in
/usr/java/jre1.6.0_10 , but this new X86_64 jre version doesn't have a
libjavaplugin.

It doesn't have anything in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins or /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins about jre(java) links for firefox as a plugins.

The instructions don't say anything about plugins, how do I get a java plugin for Firefox ??

Guess you didn't get the letter. There is no 64-bit mozilla plugin. Use Konqueror.

Somebody will probably be along shortly to recommend the GCJ plugin. Forget it, it's a bad joke.

Running the i386 jre and i386 Firefox , it works on X86_64 for a while then for some unknown reason the jre plugin just disappears from Firefox.
What gives ??

I dunno which GCJ plugin people have mentioned, but on my Debian x64 system there are a couple:

java-gcj-compat-plugin <-- this one is a joke, the applets appear, but are non functional

icedtea-gcjwebplugin <-- so far this one seems to work ok, when I installed this package is installed openjdk-6-jre. The sun-java6-jre doesn't seem to do anything on my x64 system except take up space.

It makes Java Applets work fine in Konqueror which does not need a plugin.

That's nothing for some reason my firefox updated and stole the java from my konquerer. Now konquerer won't load any java applets. I had a 32 bit firefox and the 64 bit version messed up the 32 bit when it upgraded the 64 bit. java suxs big time especially when it changes the MTU and the other connection doesn't know it. The combination of java and ICMP messed with me for a over year before I found out I had to roll my MTU back to 1300. I couldn't even email my congressman because the email was java based.

That flat didn't happen. Firefox uses a plugin, Konqueror does not. You probably removed Java or installed a different version (likely without even knowing it). You'll have to reinstall Java or tell Konqueror where it is.

$ whereis java ... might help answer that question.

It's been awhile since I installed java, I recall in the java plugin folder that firefox uses a link to the jre executable. Now my konquerer used this same link. All I can say is that I let firefox restart and right after that no more java. I didn't do nothing period but let firefox restart. The only possible might be java is corrupted. At the same time that firefow restarted. Cause the only thing I changed was going from two 512meg mem sticks to one 2gig stick.
