I remember when I used to hang out in various *BSD-using communities. Some of the arguments I've seen there given for the popularity and increased user base of Linux as compared to that of *BSD are highly similar to the arguments I've seen in recent times about the popularity and increased user base of Ubuntu as compared to that of other distributions. It's quite funny to tell you the truth. I've seen Linux being called a media poster-child by some *BSD fans, I've seen Ubuntu being called that by fans of various other distributions, etc. Everybody is "sure" the hype will be over in a few years and that people will then see the light.
