My linux, Fedora core 4 Test 2, finds my wireless card. It is listed on network devices but I cannot use it. Or maybe i just don't know how to use it. how do i get wireless going?

What type of Intel wireless card are you using ipw2100 or ipw2200 ,etc.
I have a ipw2100 on a Dell Inspiron 8600 and Fedora has the ipw2100-driver for it and if I do a /sbin/lsmod after boot, it
shows me the ipw2100 module is installed.
But the final blow is I need to goto http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp...w2100-firmware and download ipw2100-firmware-1.3-1.fr.noarch.rpm
and su and rpm-ivh ipw2100-firmware-1.3-1.fr.noarch.rpm.
But if you if you have a ipw2200 card , change in the above url ipw2200 instead of ipw2100.
reboot after installing ipw-firmware and you should have a working wireless.
If it doesn't work check /var/log/messages and see what it say's about ipw2100 or 2200 which ever.
Now if you have a router to the internet that requires encrypted passcode , that's another issure for wireless connecting,
respond to this post and state wether your using DHCP or static IP, and further help is on it's way.
Another thing I don't believe there is ipw-firmware rpm for FC4 yet , but being a noarch.rpm
the one for FC3 should work, if not, you'll have to goto sourceforge.net and get a tar.gz firmware and compile.

I've just installed the Fedora Core 4 Final, and have followed the steps described to get my ipw2100 to work, but still no go..

I get the following from my /var/log/messages

just copy the three files with *.fw to /lib/firmware and the card will work (hopefully)

Are you sure that you have ipw2100 and not the ipw2200 chipset ?
your error message indicates that you have not installed the ipw2100-firmware rpm or the one you did installed is not any good.
Did you install the ipw2100-firmware-1.3-5.at.noarch.rpm, this package doesn't come standard with FC, only the driver does.
You get the firmware rpm at http://atrpms.net/dist/common/ipw2100-firmware/
FC won't install this rpm because it is a IP binary and if it isn't GPL lic. FC won't install it.
Let me know if this works , which it should, I want to install FC4 on my Dell Inspiron8600.

I also found out that in FC4 I had to download and install ipw2100-1.1.0-31.rhfc4.at.i386.rpm and ipw2100-kmdl-2.6.11-1_FC4(the rest is your computer setup) .
At: http://atrpms.net/dist/fc4/ipw2100/ .
The last is the setup of your network with your Internet router, does your rounter require a encryption code to connect by wireless , I have attached my
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 , you will need that before you will be connected and you will have to modifythe settings to work with your router.

After accidentally somehow cutting off my access to the gnome-menu system, I did a quick reinstall keeping my /home dir in place, and this time around I installed only the firmware you'd linked to: http://atrpms.net/dist/fc4/ipw2100/

3 minutes later, I was up and running

My laptop is a Toshiba M10-S405. I recently installed FC4 final. I noticed that all of the modules were there that are required for the ipw2100 card that it has. I downloaded ipw2100-fw-1.3.tgz from the link on the Sourceforge page. After untarring and placing the files in /lib/firmware my laptop booted with a working wireless card.

iwconfig eth1 essid xxxxxxxx
iwconfig eth1 key restricted xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
dhclient eth1

gets me up and running on my encrypted router.

And yes, I even put the LICENSE file in /lib/firmware. Replace the xxxx'es with your own values.




I don't like using rpm's from external repositories by the way. But that is part of the reason that my desktop has Gentoo. I do like the use of binaries for my laptop so I can easily rebuild the install on the road if something goes horribly wrong.

To solve celian reformated the pc. I uninstalled the ipw..... s then I only installed the firmware and it worked. If you do not know how to uninstall look at the uninstall section on the link below. (note: I am a newbie there might be a better way.)
