Intel Graphics 865G
 

Hey Everyone,
I just installed Fedora Core 3 and I am a little confused as to how to fix the 865G graphics problems. There seems to be no consistent solution online. Please help me resolve this or point me to some good how-tos on the problem, thanks

What is your output of lspci? Have you tried using the i810 driver, a majority of Intel's video cards can use this at least as a starting point, etc.

I'm not familiar with that command, but I did an ls whilst inside my /proc/bus/pci directory and the output was:
00 01 devices
I haven't tried the i810 driver, but I suppose its worth a shot. Thanks.

the problem is is that Fedora reads the memory as 1Mb which is thrown out by the bios even though you probably have 64Mb shared. You need to install a random number generator and there is an rpm somewhere on the net but it has been so long since I have used that dell laptop that I don't remember where. It used to be on the Lindows forum but it changed to Linspire and now the posts have mysteriously vanished. You will have to search the web. I'll keep trying to track down my old posts.

I installed the 865 patch and booped around a bit and here are the results.
[root@gsw120 sbin]# ./865patch 8196
i865 chipset found
BIOS currently knows of 8260 kB of VideoRAM
Successfully setting size to 8196 kB
[root@gsw120 sbin]# glxgears
2559 frames in 5.0 seconds = 511.800 FPS
2760 frames in 5.0 seconds = 552.000 FPS
2640 frames in 5.0 seconds = 528.000 FPS
2760 frames in 5.0 seconds = 552.000 FPS
2640 frames in 5.0 seconds = 528.000 FPS
2640 frames in 5.0 seconds = 528.000 FPS

My glxgears was not substantially faster than prior. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks.

I think you have to find a way and go in and edit your X11 file to tell it the actual amount of RAM present. not sure how to do that. did it once. There is an explanation out there somwhere. If I can track it down I'll post it :).

THAT is the solution. its my post, and ive done months of research into this problem (as shown in that thread). there is no solution but to use a commercial xserver (www.xig.com)

read it, and weap. that's what prevents me from using debian distros, i have the same problem.
