installing software in Fedora
Hello to all, I am very honor to be a apart of this group, I just loaded Fedora on a box and it seem fun but I am not sure how to get xfree86, samba, and how do I install an apps, from a CD or downlaoding form the fedora's site, it does not have a "run" or "setup.exe" please help me, thaks
Welcome to LQ!!
If you did a standard install, you already have X-Windows (which includes some Xfree86 components). You do not need to install Xfree86.
In general, to install SW, use the package manager----it's in your menus--called install/remove software (or something similar)
.exe is a windows extension---you'll not find that on Linux Sw.
An old friend:
Thanks to all, I really appreaciate the help!, Now I have Fedora 11 installed, I have a Linksys wireless router, and a network priinter, I can connect and print from my XP and viata PC, but I can not print from Fedora, can some one please help, I have bought three books but they are all showing how to connect to a print server and not just a printer connected to a wireless router. Thanks
you can install from tar.gz or rpm,
for example :
1. download namesoftware.tar.gz....
on shell..extract that software
after that get into that software directory and compile it
usually do "configure" then "make" and "make install"
2. other way you can use "rpm" do rpm -i namesoftware.rpm..
3. yum namesoftware install
4. on graphical interface
Click Computer-->System Setting --> Add / Remove Software
Hope my knowledge helps you..
