Mostly ignorant about the details of linux, but I heard that FC6 could be installed to an external USB drive without any modification initrd changes etc etc. I am aware that typically, come changes had to be made using the rescue cd, but thought i'd give this a try.

the distro installed onto the usb drive successfully and grub is installed on the usb drive as well (I don't know if I should have installed grub onto the hard disk or the usb), but when I boot from the external drive, all i see is


I am not able to do or type anything at this point and just have to reboot.


Can someone point me in the right direction?

You need to create a new initrd file that includes the drivers for usb attached disks.
