Install guest OS on vmware

I am trying to install a guest OS using VMware on an external drive attached via USB.
I am using Fedora 6, and have installed VMware Workstation 5.5.34685. VMware configured the disc correctly, but when i go to power on the virtual machine to install WinXP VMware just sits there with a black screen and i never see any output. My first question is can i even do an install on an external disc, and if so what may i be missing.

thanks.

I would not recommend it on an external disk. USB transfers at 400Mbits opposed to a regular SATA hard disk at 1.5Gbits. However, it would be interesting to run from USB external disk. Let me know if you do get it to work.
