hey all,
Have been working with fedora for a while now. Looking to do an install for a friend on his laptop. His laptop is small, with NO cdrom drive or floppy. We have tried to load an OS from the USB but his BIOS does not support USB booting.
We are looking to reinstalled to fedora 4.
I am hoping someone can help me (direct me) to install fedora via the ISOs FROM the hard drive. If that means keeping a current partition to do the install from, so be it.
there has to be some provision on the laptop to boot from SOME media other than the harddrive, probably a parallel port floppy. from the floppy I would suggest you try to do a network install like this:
ohhhh very nice, im going to try the second link, the upgrade, because yes He currently has FC1 installed. He was able to do this using some hardware his exgirlfriend had, and the conversation to talk to her now, would not be so pleasant, haha, so were going to try something else.
wow, directions were awsome!!!! ive booted my upgrade, however, ive been asked if i want to upgrade my red hat 9 installation, or do a reinstall the system all together,
My thinking is if I do a reinstall, which i want to, i will loose the images on the hard drive before the install completes, and will crap out on me??? is this true, or can i reinstall the system, with the ISO images on the hard hard ??
OR should i upgrade Red Hate 9, which will in turn upgrade to fedora 4?
thank you very much!
oh noo.... So I decided to go with the network install, and all was going great, the packages started to install. HOWEVER, some failed, dammmmit. So i only had the option to reboot the machine, which in turn brought me to a grub prompt
Code:
grub >
with some options, but nothing usefull.
Now im stuck with no OS, and no bootable media.
Any ideas? PLEEEASSSE thank you so much
well if your HD really doesn't contain anything bootable anymore (if it was actually installing packages, and had formatted the drive, it probably won't), and you don't have any way of booting from external media,
try pulling the drive, plugging it into something with a bootable media (external usb case, another laptop, IDE adapter, etc.), and installing on that machine, then reinstall on the laptop.
pretty cheap way to get around it. but oh well.
Otherwise, try to track down a || port cdrom or floppy. I don't think that counts as external media (as in usb)
