HP Pavilion zd8224ea with Samsung TS-L532M CD/DVD Unit
Hi!
I have a HP Pavilion zd8224ea (zd8000) with Samsung TS-L532M CD/DVD Unit. After installing and upgrading to the latest kernel I (still) have this error message appearing every third second in /var/log/messages: Aug 16 12:48:42 <computer-name> kernel: Error: Not ready -- (Sense key=0x02) Aug 16 12:48:42 <computer-name> kernel: Incompatible medium installed -- (asc=0x30, ascq=0x00) Aug 16 12:48:42 <computer-name> kernel: The failed "Read Cd/Dvd Capacity" packet command was: Aug 16 12:48:42 <computer-name> kernel: "25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 " More from /var/log/messages: kernel: hdb: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L532M, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive kernel: hdb: ATAPI 24X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, DMA Any ideas? And oh.... there are no media in the unit. Fedora Core 4 Kernel 2.6.12-(all of them) |
I also have this problem with an HP DV4000 series laptop. It has the same dvd drive ( TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L532M), and likewise i get these same errors when booting. When using a 2.6.10 series kernel the problem didn't present itself, so it must be recently manifested in a newer kernel. Anyone who might have a solution to this problem, please help!

I have the exact same problem on my hp zd8230us:
$ uname -rm 2.6.12-1.1447_FC4smp i686 # hdparm -i /dev/hdb /dev/hdb: Model=TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L532M, FwRev=HR04, SerialNo=654M401196 Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic } RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0 BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=2048kB, MaxMultSect=0 (maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120} PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4 DMA modes: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 *mdma2 AdvancedPM=no Drive conforms to: Reserved: * signifies the current active mode I added hdb=ide-scsi to the kernel line in /etc/grub.conf and it stopped the kernel mesages at 3 second intervals. However, inserting a cd or dvd no results in multiple mounts? that is, it will mount /dev/scdx for x=1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7? It seems harmless, but can anyone explain what happens? Thanks! |
update:
I saw some posts indicating that this is not a kernel problem, but rather a poor app. After probing around for what was using /dev/hdb (with fuser -a /dev/hdb and various ps), I was still stumped. On a long shot, I tried killing the hald (haldeamon) and .... no more error! I have, of course, lost some hotplug features, but I do not care and running a command after hooking my camera up, for example, seems preferable to an ever spinning disk (hence fan!). I am still interested in another work around. Perhaps a bug report to the hald folks is in order? I hope someone else finds this useful |
