I am still figuring out The Fedora and I am trying to set up a small <private> FTP Server mainly between my son <runs windows> and I. I haven't really done this before, and am not sure where to start. I searched the forums and only found vague info on large scale servers. I would really appreciate it if someone could discuss this with me. If there is a better way to share files between his and mine it would be helpful. I build computers and have them humming in no time flat, but haven't quite got a handle on file transfer things. We send alot of files back and forth in the snail mail, but I know it can be done, but am not sure quite how to go about it.
Thanks,
Distribution: Ubuntu, Debian, Various using VMWare

If your son is on the same LAN as you, look into Samba. If you are looking at sharing files over the internet, I suggest using SFTP and SCP.
SFTP and SCP are part of SSH, and is more secure than FTP because everything is encrypted whereas FTP is plain-text. Basically, you need to install OpenSSH on your Fedora Box (It probably is already there) and install Putty or WinSCP on his Windows Box. Then make sure Port 22 is open on your file server, and if you are behind a router make sure that Port 22 is forwarded from the router to your Fedora box.
Test that ssh is running on your machine by running "ssh localhost" and it should connect to the SSH server running on your machine. If so, you should be able to connect using Putty from your son's machine. Obviously, you need to know what your Public IP address is. You should then be able to share files using WinSCP (A graphical file transfer utility). I have some other info Here.
There are a couple of ways to do this - probably the simplest for configuration would be vsftpd to provide FTP. Although if you're both familiar with Windows shares, it may be easier to use Samba.
I'd suggest just trying it and then asking more questions based on how you'd like everything to operate. As long as your box can't be directly accessed from the internet there's little risk.
I say use FTP. vsftp to be specific. Here's a nice little tutorial, to get you started. If you only set up a server on your Linux box, you'll need to make sure whoever will use it has write access to /home/ftp/pub, or whatever you set up as the ftp directory. A good ftp client for Windows is FileZilla.
