How to temporarily quit GNOME and stop X Window server?

I'm trying to install NVidia graphics card driver under Fedora 4, and it asked me to stop X Window. How do I close done GNOME, leave me only a text based console, and stop x window server?

I'v been reading different articles, still couldn't find a proper solution

In the file /etc/inittab, you must change your runlevel to text only. I don't remember the numbers exactly from my Fedora days, but a quick description is provided in the file.

Then just reboot the machine, when you are done make sure to edit this file again or things may be a little less colorful (I can't say that can I?).

Maybe Ctrl-Alt-Backspace?

Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to a console screen and type

init 3

Install the drivers and then type

init 5

to restart X.

Did you read the sticky at the top of this forum about nVidia drivers? If not, you should have!
