It's compatibility,docx is a Microsoft's product .I know that it's possible to open it with Open office.You can use the Open XML Translator for Open Office to be able to read and edit docx files with Open Office.

I am trying to view my essay marks, which are in docx format (posted online), in moz firefox but it is not opening at all. I have open office.. what do I do?
KOffice applications have problems with .docx files (can be opened, but no content is shown), but OpenOffice Writer has no problem with it: text and embedded images are all displayed properly.
