How to install Java?

Hey Guys:

I've been to several sites that try to explain how to install Java but either I'm too dumb to understand or there instructions elaborate enough for a noob like myself. Can some please give me simple and complete instructions for installing Java?

Go to sun.com, download the linux version, chmod the downloaded file with chmod +x <filename> run the installer with ./<filename>

Something like that anyway. Do it as root if you want to isntall it anywhere other than your home directory.

I explain how I install Java on my Wiki. Here's a link to the page:

Hey Glennzo:

I followed your instructions exactly and it didn't work. I tried the version of Java you told me to download and I tried it with another version I found. I tracked down two other folders that said "Firefox" on them and linked to them as well but after I restarted Firefox I didn't get anything. I went to a site where I could test the installation but it said it wasn't working. Can you help me with this?

I see that you said you followed the instructions exactly, but I still need to ask if you installed compat-libstdc++-33. That was the biggest tripping point for me. As a matter of fact, I just finished installing Java 6 for my Fedora 7 install and all is well.

Yes, I installed compat-libstdc++33. It told me what version I had, just like your instructions said it would but I still couldn't get it to work when I re-started Firefox.

If you type about:plugins in the URL bar do you see Java listed?
