How to install Fedora 9 on external USB hard disk and use a boot CD?

I would like to install Fedora 9 on an external 2.5" hard disk I have lying around, for use with my laptop. While the laptop supports booting from USB pendrives, the hard disk appears to be incompatible for booting.

I would like to be able to boot the Fedora installation by just plugging the USB hard disk in, and dropping a CD in the drive then powering on the laptop. I don't want to have to touch the internal hard disk at all.

Can anyone point me to a guide, or give me a few pointers?

How is the 2.5" drive connected? If it is USB and your laptop supports booting from the USB port, I know of no reason why it would not boot. If you install Fedora to the drive, also install grub to THAT drive and not your MBR or you will have to have it connected to boot windows (if you have windows on the internal drive.) On my laptop, I can boot from the USB port by pressing F12 from the POST as soon as I hit the power on button. You would not need a CD in the drive.

The drive is connected with a cheap caddy bought off eBay. I have already tried exactly what you suggested, and the laptop will not boot from it.

So can anyone tell me how to create a boot CD?

booting off the usb

Hi all,

For days, I have been trying to find a solution to a similar problem:

I have a 160 GB USB hard drive and want to install a Linux distribution on it in such a way that I can boot it on any PC of similar configuration.

I have installed Fedora 9 on the USB disk and as explained in previous reply, have not installed GRUB in MBR.

Whenever I boot from USB (just to clarify... my BIOS does support USB boot) I get GRUB error code 17. and a blank screen.

Really not sure what the problem is. I have tried other Linux live editions also like Nimblex, DSL. They seem to work but I need a full blown distribution like Fedora or Debian etc...

Please help!

I was prompted by fedora installation. Out of the two choices, I chose the First sector of boot partition (/dev/sda1)

hey all,im new to fedora. I was wondering, is there any way to load fedora on a flash drive and boot to be able to have a virtual desktop on the drive? i want it to be able to save files and setting on the flash drive... Mandriva has a similar thing but they're charging quite a bit, is there any way to replicate the results?
