How to enable Gnome logout options to exit to the command prompt

Im running Fedora 7. I have added a bootload option to send me to the prompt. However, when I enter X Windows I cant leave without restarting the machine. I would love to have the ability to exit to the command prompt. I like X Windows when I need to run maintenance, updates, and other applications, however when Im done with X windows tools and utilities, I would like to unload X Windows. This will allow me to eliminate the Overhead of X Windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Simple, edit the /etc/inittab file and change the line

id:5:initdefault:

To be;

id:3:initdefault:

The GUI interface will not start, you still can get into the GUI Gnome session by typing startx after you log on, when you exit you will be back at the virtual console.

Try CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE if you set init to 3
