On KDE 4.3, you right click the icon, click properties, on the general tab edit the field beside the icon. That's it.

You installed KDE in Fedora?? (Isn't Gnome the default?)

What do you mean by "from source".

Nor do I understand your problem, but if you're trying to make global changes in the KDE desktop files, those files may be found in /usr/share/. On this laptop I have KDE, GNOME and XFCE installed, and the system desktop files are here:
Code:
$ locate -r ^/usr/share/.*desktop$ | grep -o '/usr/share/[^/]*/' | uniq
/usr/share/Thunar/
/usr/share/applications/
/usr/share/applnk/
/usr/share/apps/
/usr/share/autostart/
/usr/share/desktop-menu-patches/
/usr/share/doc/
/usr/share/gdict-1.0/
/usr/share/gdm/
/usr/share/gnome/
/usr/share/hal/
/usr/share/kde4/
/usr/share/locale/
/usr/share/mimelnk/
/usr/share/pixmaps/
/usr/share/services/
/usr/share/servicetypes/
/usr/share/soprano/
/usr/share/sounds/
/usr/share/system-config-boot/
/usr/share/templates/
/usr/share/thumbnailers/
/usr/share/wallpapers/
/usr/share/xfce4/
/usr/share/xsessions/
