How to control sleep/standby etc?
 

This may be a basic question, but do I control sleeping and standby mode through the bios (running set up at boot time) or through the operating system (I'm running Fedora)? I've been searching for this, and I've know how to add "acpi=on" to my grub.conf file, but I haven't seen anything on where to set how long to wait before sleeping, etc. I know how to do it from the bios but I thought it would be better to set it with the operating system. If I should do it throught the operating system, how do I do it? Do I need to download some packages?

Anyone? I'd love to have my linux desktop box go into hibernate at night, either suspend-to-ram, suspend-to-disk, or whatnot, but I'd love to have it spin down and go quiet.....

For the ACPI power management
Look in /proc/acpi. Try these commands (I think):
echo 1 >> /proc/acpi/sleep
Look at acpi.sourceforge.net for more info.
I don't think suspend to ram is supported (one of the modes aren't). To get the hibernate, use the 'swsusp' program.

If you are setting stuff in the bios, then you are probably using APM, not ACPI.

Thanks. I know I'm using ACPI because I set in the bios whether to use ACPI or APM or both.

I vaguely remember in redhat 8.0 there was a power managment control under one of the control menu. (I didn't use it). I don't have one now and I can't figure out if I missed a package to install or which package it's included in. Is it not included in Fedora? :( Anybody know?
