How do I restart X-Server?

I am trying to change my screen display size. After I choose the display I want, it tells me to log out and restart the X-Server. I log out and back in, and nothing is changing. Help, Thanks!

Just do ctrl+alt+backspace together, your screen will be redrawn as X is restarted.

If you are using KDE, there is the kxrandrtray program that lets you do it on the fly without logging out. Running it may work if you have some kde libraries installed. However, your problem may be that the other resolutions have problems and the Xorg server drops back to the one that you have. Look through your Xorg.log in /var/log/. ( Note, it may be called Xorg.0.log. Check which is the most recent. ) If you use "less Xorg.0.log" for example, entering '/\(EE\)' will locate the errors.

I had a similar problem, i restart x server, but when i log in my resolution has changed to 1680x1050, but my toolbars and windows are completley out of proportion, they're massive. i tried changing the resolution again but that didn't do anything
