how do i restart x gui when it hangs

Hi all,
I run a duo boot of win xp pro and fedora core 13 Goddard. I have a problem with x that is my (gui) it keeps hanging in a session even when you don't expect it. So i usually run ctrl+alt+f2 login into the terminal and do a clean reboot but some time i need to view pics or a video. How best can i restart x gui without rebooting the entire box.

can i kill the x PID or restart it. and PID can it be because when i run
Quote:
#ps aux
output is so long that it covers the entire screen.

You can try the hot key combination of ctrl + Alt + Backspace to kill the xserver. I think that is configurable, however I have never had a reason to change the key combination.

You can also use 'kill pid xxxx' as root. The xserver shows up as 'X' ( upper case X ) for a name. You can find its pid with the 'top' command, or with 'ps aux | grep X'.

For me, the bigger question is why is X appearing to 'hang'?

Give it a go when everything is working.

#./"name of x's executable" restart
if i cd to
Quote:
/etc/rc.d/init.d
where i can get executables

Try 'locate startx'. If you get a message that the DB is more than 8 days old, or does not exist, as root run 'updatedb'. Then try the locate.

startx on my system is in /usr/bin. Fedora may be different.

What video driver are you using?
