Type startx in the console and see what happens.

If you have configured your graphics card, then run the command "startx" to start the gui.

hi, i typed startx, and since i've got an lcd monitor, the screen went blank and it said "OUT OF RANGE".

how do i get out of this? do i have to connect a CRT monitor , and change the display settings then reconnect my lcd, or is there a better way through the command prompt?

thanks again

Whilst logged into the command line, do "su -" to switch to root and then run "system-config-display".

system-config-display is all you would need to enter. What happens when you run that command?
