how can I speed Fedora core 2 up

I installed FC2 and it seems to be slower then FC1. I don't have the best computer out there but FC2 should be doing better then it is. What can I do to seed it up? What services can I disable that I don't need?

I am running it on a i686 and I think i have 256 RAM. How do you check how much RAM you have what is the command?

Here's a list of services from one of my boxes...

anacron
apmd
atd
crond
kudzu
messagebus
netfs
network
ntpd
portmap
random
rawdevices
rhnsd
smb
sshd
syslog

And if I really cared to, I might look into some of those to see if I really needed them.

If you don't have Samba, you don't need smb.
If you don't use a time server, you don't need ntpd.
If you don't use SSH, you don't need sshd.

Most of the specs for your computer can be found in /proc/ files... cpuinfo, meminfo, etc.

Consider a lightweight window manager. I used to use KDE on my amd 1700+ w/ 512mb of ram but I did not like the speed. I switched to Xfce and Fluxbox and will not go back. Both are very lightweight and are actually pretty!
