Hostname inexistant on local network
Hey,
So I have smb running on my F10 system. I can access it in windows explorer "\\192.168.1.22" fine. However, hostname seams to not exist. Samba is set to the correct workgroup/domain, which is simply "WORKGROUP". In windows, if I go to view workgroup computers my system is not there. At windows, I cannot ping the F10 hostname, only 192.168.1.22. I've been trying to fix this hours and hours... Initially thinking DNS, then I was told to check WINS in SMB... I'm at an end. I can ping my windows machine hostname fine. smb.conf: Code:
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the |
Has it really been hours? It can take a long time for Windows to figure out this stuff..
You can force Windows by putting the other machine in LMHOSTS 192.168.1.22 mysmbserver #PRE For NT, it's "\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\LMHOSTS" (assuming your system is in \WINNT) The "#PRE" is not a comment, it needs to be there. With this in place (and you probably need to reboot), you can do Start->Run, type \\mysmbserver and, all other things being equal, it will pop up. |
Helo.
I have the same problem, but I have dynamic IP's on machines. What may I do in this case? LMHOSTS will not be a solution in my case? Note that my router (Cisco) recognize well my linux PC hostname, but no one of Windows XP machines can ping my Linux by hostname. Any comments please? I am on Fedora 9. Thanks! |
