high memory usage.

i noticed when i go into the system monitor it says the memory usage is around 240mb out of 256mb. this is after ive booted up, opened mozilla firebird, xmms, gaim and a few nautilus windows.
in the processes window it is reporting X as using around 185mb of memory.

Is this normal?
is there anything i can do to reduce it or should i go and get some more ram

any help appreciated.

This is normal *nix behavior, no need to get any extra memory because of this.

These are 2 of my machines, the first one has some users logged in and is very active. The second one is doing 'nothing' (no users active, no outside connections etc).

Mem: 514920 - 507092 - 7828
Mem: 1033308 - 937172 - 96136

As you can see both use just about all the mem they can get.

Go to command line and issue the 'free' command... it will shows the buffer/cache used .. the used memory space is actually being using as buffer/cache .. here is the example of my free output .. almost 100% physical memory is used:

Code:

$ free
             total used free shared buffers cached
Mem:        773632     745524      28108          0     187192      87896
-/+ buffers/cache:     470436     303196
Swap:      1558296       1156    1557140
