Help installing Flash

I downloaded the flash program to /home/carlwill/Downloads

Here is my code, can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz < --------------- This is the file I downloaded, I can't seem to extract it from gunzip to run the "sh" command.

Here is what I am doing,

I open a konsole window:

Code:
su
password
cd /home/carlwill/Downloads
ls <------------------I can see the file called install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz
tar -zxf install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz
[root@localhost Downloads]# tar -zxf install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Perhaps the download failed or did not transfer correctly. Is there an md5sum you can verify it against? Perhaps you could try downloading it again.

I am assuming by that last post that you suggested I did everything correct then?

I will redownload the flash file to the same location and try again.

I re-downloaded this file install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz from the macromedia website to the same location and still get the same error?

I don't know why? Flash can not be this hard to install, can it?

I tried to move this to a different location rather than the Downloads folder and still get
[code[][root@localhost carlos]# tar -zxf install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors[/code]

You seem to be doing everything fine (unless it is so blindingly obvious that I can't see it either). I can only assume that there is a problem with the download.

Try deleting the downloads that you have, then downloading with:
wget --cache=off -c install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz

Personnally, I'd prefer to install the xpi flash player without problems: download flash.xpi from Netscape FTP, then open it with Mozilla, restart your browser.

if youre running a GUI you could right click on the flash.tar.gz folder, extract the files, then do the steps from there

You wanna post a link to that and a short HOWTO? Went to http://ftp.netscape.com/pub/ and didn't find it.

if you can ever get the files extracted, the only thing you have to do is copy the flashplayer.xpt and libflashplayer.so to the plugins directory for your browser. I use mozilla so I copied them to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. Wish I knew how to help you get the files extracted, but I'm still a newbie.

You can go to this link and you will find the instructions and the rpm to install the flash player, and the proper plugin, with very little difficulty! I tried it and works wonders!
