hdc: drive not ready for command

i just loaded FC2 on my machine and everytime after i select what kernel i want to boot from the grub menu, it displays:

hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: drive not ready for command

....

it fills up the screen doing that, and then it acts like it boots normally. does anyone know what is causing this? my system uses a an onboard promise raid/ide controller, but it's never given me a problem before (rh 9, slackware 10, suse 9.1 pro, debian).

Is hdc your cd-rom drive? Could there be an error i the grub-conf file directing the kernel to root at the wring address? In that case, if it tries to access cd-rom and there's nothing it can work with, it could tell you the drive is busy and won't respond to your command.

I am experiencing the same issue (instead of hdc, it shows hdd) and it is related to a cd-rw. However, the system boots OK after that repeated message and the cd-rw works fine both for reading and writing.

What could be done to eliminate or fix that repeated message?

Domecq.

drive assignment looks something like this:

hda: dvd-rom
hdc: cd-rw
hde: 80gb hd (on ide/raid controller)
hdg: 10gb hd (on ide/raid controller) <--- where linux lives

i didn't see anything about hdc in grub configuration. what now?
