happy as a lark with Fedora Core 5
 

Finally..

A linux distro that:

1) has the latest software already loaded (and works)
2) Works with ALL my hardware with little fiddling (except my printer, but I'll figure that out i guess--Epson Stylus CX4800)
3) Works consistently EACH time I boot and doens't have apps that suddenly refuse to start or hardware that suddenly stops working for no reason.
4) Has a very easy way to get new software and propietary software support for ATI cards and stuff (thank you livna!!! :-)))

8 days and counting; is Linux finally ready for prime time or am I just lucky? :-)

I'm feelin that vibe, dude. I've been "in and out" of linux for about 2 years now, installing a new/updated distro every few months and usually getting frustrated and returning my hard drive space back to Windows within a week or so.

However, FC5 has done something different for me. I've had nearly no problems, it's been reading the data off my NTFS partitions beautifully, and everything I've tried to doso far has worked.(minus a few minor issues, but it's expected)

I'm going to be introducing it to the rest of my family very soon now (who you may describe as less-than-savvy) and I think they will enjoy it.

Many props to all those who tirelessly work on these distributions (esp. the Fedora Project!), whose efforts are truly the substance of the linux community.

Hehe :D nice to know more and more people are finding Fedora complete. Good for Fedora, Good For Linux :)

one of my biggest reasons for getting intersted in linux is overal geekiness but also because Ive been looking for an excuse to dump windows.

The only thing that has kept me from really committing full time in the past is that I tended to update my hardware almost all the time, and it just seemed really hairy to expect that linux would immediately be compatible with all that hardware.

I also want to install linux on certain family members computers so they stop calling me at all hours of the day and night because they have done something to screw up their windows system (yes, i'm the unofficial "tech support rep" in my family)...grrr. None of them do anything that really requires that they use windows, so it's a very tempting thought.
My problems with Fedora in the past (and RedHat in general) were mostly that certain things would suddenly stop working even though I had done nothing to provoke it. It is my hope that the new ways of dealing with dependancies and the like have finally paid off for this distro (and debian too, which I also like) and that I can say bye-bye to the issues I had in the past.

:-)))) smiling. Btw, does anyone know how to get my printer to work? I did some searching and CUPS claims there isnt' a working driver except in something called "gutenprint" which I've not attempted to install yet.

gutenprint is the correct driver for your printer. It should auto configfure (via cups) when you install it.

yah, i was just hoping there was a yum package for it, but I guess not. my attempt to "make" and "make install" it were ...not good.

What errors did you received when trying to run these commands?

I use FC about 2 years, now I'm on FC5 since release, and never had problems with it. My mom, dad, and guests are easily use it.
XGL works great on my AMD64, its awesome, and everyone likes it :). My HP printer works great, try to look for your printer on that site, may be you'll be lucky.

I checked out that site and went ahead and installed gutenprint. The drivers that gutenprint installed for my printer were not visible in the Gnome Printing interface. So, I went to http://localhost:631 or whatever the site is that you can administer CUPS from a browser windwo and my driver was listed in there.

It worked--but I lack the ability to check ink levels thru the software

hey, i'm having a problem with fedora and simplymepis getting online. ive got 3 hdrives in 1 pc. xp home, fedora 5.0 and simplymepis. i used to get online in mepis and chk email but now i can't get online in either of them except xp.can u help me?

I finally got around to reading this thread, and I have to wholeheartedly agree with the 'ready for primetime' attitude. I've been mentioning to a few of my 'geekier' windows & mac associates over the past few days that I feel Linux is about a year away from out-of-the-box newbie home use, all the while thinking that I may be a tad optimistic.

But upon reading this thread, I see I am not alone, and that perhaps, with the ease-of-use seen in FC5, perhaps the time is now.

Try to guten<something> (type guten and press <tab> two times). For my hp, i run hp-toolbox program, it shows everything I need.

lol that didnt work, but I know now the reason i can't print is b/c my black is empty..god forbid Epson still hasn't learned from their class action lawsuit to disable that stupid functionality.

I agree to a point but as I was just telling my boss here at work (who was super-curious when I decided to switch to linux completely on my work machine) {thank god I have a great job! LOL} that (and I dont mean this in a bitchy way) the main reason I think I'm not having any major problems with Linux as I've had in the past is because my hardware is not really that new--its still serving me well but the last time I did any major upgrades was like back in 04 when I got a new motherboard to fit my processor that I had bought in 2002!

With the exception of the fact that my printer, being an all-in-one that doesn't seem to work fully yet in my distro (I can't scan). Everything else is working fine..I want to switch..badly..i'm so f-ing tired of windows and viruses and spyware and all the other sh*t :))
