Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Haldaemon wont't start on my x86_64 .
ran /sbin/services/haldaemon start , on the command line it wouldn't say why it wouldn't start, just :Failed
I can't read my floppy or cd/dvdrom because hal won't start.
Distribution: Mainley fedora core ... and whatever other distro helps reduce my work load at the moment.
You could just manually mount them. Create the directories in mnt just in case you get haldaemon to work. Then add the appropriate entries in fstab. Just remember to delete the fstab entries if you happen to get haldaemon working. There a plenty of tutorials and howto's for manual mounting. As for your haldaemon troubles I wish you luck. I was just relating what happened to me was a result of an upgrade which seems to be problematic still.
