GUI on KDE desktop not working

Hi folks,

Fedora Core 3
KDE Desktop

Most GUI on KDE desktop seem not working. They can't be started

KStart -> System Settings ->
Network
Red Hat Network Configuration
User Groups
etc.

KStart -> System Tools ->
Hardware Browser
Network Device Control (working - this seems to be Gnome package)
Konsole (working)
Red Hat Network Alert
Red Hat Network
Yum Extended
etc.

They were working before. For those to be accessed by "ROOT" they popup a screen for entering password.

After I played around to setup KPPP without success this problem occurred. I'm NOT aware whether it was caused by running "yum update" or as aforesaid. IIRC a kde package has been updated.

Remark: not all of them not working. ONLY those relating to network seems not working.

Please advise how to fix them. TIA

Try to start them from a terminal, so we know what error messages you are getting.

HI Megaman X,

Fedora Core 3

I tried before posting, as USER, none of them can start. As ROOT they can start seamlessly without error message displayed.

Previously this box worked properly. Only after I played around to setup KPPP without success early this week then problem came. All USER can't use GUI program to start network. I have created new user to test it. What I have discovered is follows;

$ ls -al /usr/bin/kppp
rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Apr 30 09:53 /usr/bin/kppp -> consolehelper
$ ls -al /usr/bin/system-config-date
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Apr 19 21:12 /usr/bin/system-config-date -> consolehelper
$ ls -al /usr/bin/system-config-network
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Apr 19 05:57 /usr/bin/system-config-network -> consolehelper
$ ls -al /usr/bin/consolehelper
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 5636 Oct 20 2004 /usr/bin/consolehelper

All "consolehelper" are now highlighted in brown colour. IIRC they were not highlighted before. I could not remember exactly what command I have run during playing around on "KPPP" making them highlighted unexpectedly. Besides what is the "s" flag on "-rwsr-sr-x" above.

Remark: "/usr/bin/consolehelper" all highlighted in brown colour (including directory/subdirectory)

Red Hat chose to install kppp as a so-called consolehelper application. This PAM based mechanism avoids a setuid root installation, instead popup a password dialog. I think this is the trick. But how to set them back.

Any advice. TIA

This problem can be solved by reinstalling the "usermode" rpm.

Hi j_75080,

Tks for your advice.

Problem solved already. It was caused by a 256MB RAM stick not secured properly on its slot reducing the total RAM on my PC to 256MB from 512MB. As GUI consumed lot of RAM therefore the PC took prolonged time to start.

Tks again
