Im currently using Fedora Core 2. I wanted to reinstall my alsa-utils package however thought about upgrading it which worked however alsactl (i think) wouldnt restore my settings because I also needed to upgrade the alsa-libs so i tried to uninstall it, of course the package is required by another package. So I got my older version is tried to down grade to it.

Seemed to work as rpm command had no objections about it. However when I rebooted to make sure the Sound Settings would work on each login. The GUI Login (after the GUI Startup script) just hangs and does nothing.

Is there anyway to get into Command Line Mode before I get into the GUI Login and attempt to remove the older version alsa-utils, so the newer version works?

Are you not able to switch to a virtual terminal by hitting ctl-alt-F1?

If somehow that doesn't work , you can press "a" at the grub menu and append "3" to the end of the kernel options. That will boot you into init level 3, which is multi-user without the GUI login screen.
