Green and blue triangles of death?

On two occasions, both of which occurred while I was installing something, my desktop environment got erased and replaced with a phenomenon that I can only describe as "The Green and Blue Triangles of Death", accompanied by the time and date being prominently displayed in the center of the screen. From here, I am unable to find my way back to the desktop and have to reboot. WTF is going on and how do I fix it?

It doesn't matter anymore, I finally got Scientific Linux working so that's what I have now.

The green and blue triangles are not "off death" Katie. They are from the "lock screen" you were supposed to slide UP to get back to your desktop...
