getting xmodmap to work for all users?

I'm well on my way to rocking Fedora on my iBook; wifi works, system runs great...except Xmodmap

I have placed the keycodes I wish to alter into /etc/X11/Xmodmap

I have also, for good measure, established a .Xmodmap file in /home/username

This works great for "User A" (ie, the account I established during installation)...but on "User B" (established later through the GUI user & groups menu item), it doesn't work.

"User B" does seem to acknowledge after I created the .Xmodmap file that such a file exists, it just doesn't seem to do anything with it.

Any ideas? Could this be a file permissions thing? Does the /etc/X11/Xmodmap need to be more than read-only by Others?

not permissions

Nope it's not a permissions thing, as far as I can tell. I just tried a chmod on /etc/X11/Xmodmap and still it doesn't work.

What chmod exactly? Did you also change user and group?

Don't really understand how, but I kinda figured it out. In order for it to work, the key marked "fn" must be pressed along with the Apple or the Enter key. This works, now, in both the initial user and the second user accounts. I swear it didn't work before, but then again I have tried a lot of different solutions, so something must have kicked in...but I've lost track of what I did and when this started working this way.

So problem solved. More or less.

(For the record, though, and for the benefit of anyone else running an Apple computer: this is not a perfectly graceful solution to the one-buttonness of an Apple. Controlling exactly what is being right-clicked does not seem to be consistent between all applications. I think an external 3-button mouse is probably the best solution.)

Glad to hear it :).

Well, from my experience with linux so far, I'd guess that there is the chance to achieve exactly what you want in several different ways -- I just don't know how .

That is always a good idea with linux...
