Getting a server to work

Well im like a Linux newbie and I really don't know alot. I know someone who is walking me through a few steps in setting up web server, SSH, and FTP. I am using a Linksys Model BEFSR41 V2 router. I spoke to a technician guy and said they don't use Linux, but I know someone that uses Linksys, so im guessing the Tech. had no idea or was crapping me. I setup a Static IP already but I might of done that wrong. The internet is working, I just can't seem to connect to my server. Could someone walk me through it step by step?

What do you mean you cannot connect to your server? What is connected to the internet, the router or the linux box? The ethernet spec. does not care what kind of software you are using; therefore, rest easy this can be done.

Alright, thats good, The computer is connected to the router, which is connected to the internet. I fowarded the ports to the right IP and things, but I still can't seem to connect through SSH
