Get me unsmolted!

What is smolt?? How do I get rid of it??

I just spent all morning reinstalling Fedora. Everything ok. Just put in the new modules for nvidia. Restart. Smolt wants to do its thing. But must have the wrong internet connection details. I get a BLANK screen, and nothing happens. Cannot boot into gdm!!

How do I kill smolt and boot??

The Fedora hardware profiler is a server-client system that does a hardware scan against a machine and sends the results to a public Fedora Project turbogears server. The sends are anonymous and should not contain any private information other than the physical hardware information and basic OS info. / Smolt is developed to collect hardware profiles from end users in a opt-in method. It was originally written for Fedora and now also supports SuSE, Debian and Ubuntu. Support for Archlinux, Frugalware, Mythvantage, and Crux is in the support queue. It should be compatible with any system that uses HAL.

If it is a system service boot into runlevel 3 then 'chkconfig --level 345 smolt off'.

I couldn't get started at all, so I reinstalled and did not elect to participate in smolt. It has serious faults, ie, I could not boot, nor enter into any kind of terminal where I could unsmolt. Just a dead screen, a simple boot, I don't know which runlevel, and smolt trying to connect to eth0 and failing. It did react to ctrl alt del, and shutdown.Without smolt I can boot ok!

Someone should inform Fedora!

Other flavours of Linux have a failsafe mode on boot. Fedora seems not to have.

Using Fedora implies taking part in making the distribution better.
That is not the responsibility of others but of you: the user.
Open Source Software requires active participation to help it evolve.
So participate and help Fedora evolve.

and using fedora implys that you like fixing a ALWAYS in testing fedora !!!!
because of the VERY fast development of fedora things often break or need fixing .
if you DO NOT want to fix things as they break -- then DO NOT USE FEDORA IN THE FIRST PLACE !!!!!
