Angry fstab file being overwritten

Hi,

I have edited the /etc/fstab file on a number of occasions to mount my windows partitions on startup. This seems to work fine when using the reboot option. However, when I shutdown the computer and later restart it my windows partitions are not mounted. The reason for this is my edited version of the /etc/fstab has somehow been overwritten by the system.

Does anyone know what is causing this? Is there any other way to auto-mount the windows partitions on startup?

Any help greatly appreciated.

MacLin

Hi Maclin,
This is not an usual procedure. The /etc/fstab should be "system edited" only on installation. As you are talking, some startup procedure are improperly changing your fstab. I would suggest you to look at the startup scripts which are in the "/etc/rc.d/init.d" to determine if anyone is referring to "fstab". For example,
Code:
cd /etc/rc.d/init.d
grep -l fstab *
If any filename appears, edit it to see if it is editing the fstab. Also verify if "/etc/fstab" is a real file or it is a link to another, by entering
Code:
ls -l /etc/fstab

look for option like "kudzu"

If you have any lines with the option "kudzu" in them, they will be updated by kudzu(redhat or fedora only) on powerup.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The problem was that I had "kudzu" included in the lines that mounted the windows partitions. I removed this word and the problem ceased.

I appreciate the help
