Forcing Device ID
I just installed Fedora Core 5 prior to updating my kernel my wireless card was not found now. I upgraded kernel's and it is found, it takes the device ID of eth1 when it should be wlan0. When I try to activate it, it says

Determining IP information for eth1... failed; no link present.  Check cable?
when I run iwlist eth1 scan

Warning: Driver for device eth1 has been compiled with version 20 of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 19 Some things may be broken...

eth1                Interface doesn't support scanning : No such Device

I am not sure how to fix this problem. any suggestions?

Two choices that might be possible one is to edit the /etc/modrobe.conf file and change the alias line entry for your wireless interface from 'alias eth1 mydevice' to 'alias wlan0 mydevice'.

The other is to rename your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts ifcfg-wlan0 to ifcfg-eth1 and then edit the file and change the line DEVICE=wlan0 to DEVICE=eth1

Then restart the network service; service network restart

All as root of course.

Ok so now everything has correct name and it seems to have correct drivers since it does have the right name... when i try to connect it still comes up with
Determining IP information for wlan0... failed; no link present. Check cable?

And which wireles card are you speaking about? How are you attepmting to activate the interface?

I go into the network dialog then I select the broadcomm device (which is now wlan0 instead of eth1) I click on the activate button and it will try to connect but fails and suggests checking the cable. This is a wireless device and it should be trying to connect to my wireless router with DHCP. And still i try to do the iwlist wlan0 scan and it still gives me errors. I read a article that suggested recompiling the kernel without the bcm43xx then use ndiswrapper and make it work. I just want to know the easiest and fastest way to get this to work.

Ok i got it working now using the bcm43xx-fwcutter
