Flash in Mozilla

I know this was posted below, but no one has answered and this has been bugging the daylights out of me.

I am running on Core 1 with Mozilla 1.4.1 and for the life of me, I can not get Flash to install correctly. According the flash install, everything goes through just fine without any errors and the plug-in is installed in the correct plug-in directory /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4.1/plug-ins.

I check Help--About Plugins in Mozilla and it shows nothing.

Any help you guys can give, I would appreciate it.

Thanks
JJ

so are you saying that in the folder :
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.4.1/plugins
you have a file called :
libflashplayer.so
?
i don't know if it is a typo, or new naming conventions, but it is plugins and not plug-ins.

Sorry bout that. Yes the path is as follows
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.4.1/plugins

I have even tried the Flashfix and bugzilla recommends, but there are instructions on how to run the script and I keep getting an error telling that I am leaving out an options when I try to run. But the options it gives don't do anything either.

What I usually do is download Flash, untar it, cd to the Flash directory, run ./flashplayer-installer, and just ok the default install directory (/home/user/.mozilla/plugins). You need to do so as user, not root. This way, when you upgrade Mozilla in the future, you won't need to reinstall Flash.

You much have installed the flash plugin as root

Since you already have the plugin at /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4.1/plugins/ , then do a link to libflashplayer.so

go to your mozilla directory

cd .mozilla
mkdir plugins <------- if you don't have the plugins directory
cd plugins
ln -s ~/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4.1/plugins/libflashplayer.so

That should do it.

Now open mozilla and click the Help tab and then select "About Plug-ins"

You should have the plugins listed

Alright, I am about to give up. I went through and removed all the plugin files that the flash installer installs. logged in under my user account (not root this time) and then re-installed. went through just fine with no errors.

This time it tells me I need to log out and log back in for changes to take effect but to also have the administrator or root remove the xpti.dat file from the components directory. so I do that. now when I click on Help -> About plugins, Mozilla tells me I have no plugins installed.

Now it did this (telling me I have no plug-ins installed) both before and after I created linked files in the /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4.1/plugins and /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins folders. And I tried it in just mozilla-1.4.1 folder without anything in the mozilla folder and still get the same thing no matter what I am trying.

It's starting to hack me off a little.

One more thing though I remembered after re-installing. I tried using an rpm install earlier and it got to the very end of the process and errored on me. When I tried to re-install, it told me the package was already installed. Is there anyway to go back and remove it. Or, I know there is a way to force a re-install, but can't remember the command

Again, thanks guys for all your help. Other then this one little bug, I have been able to get Apache, PHP, MySQL and MySQL CC running perfectly with no problems. If I can get this, I would be 100% satisfied with the system

and that's the same one that I installed as well. This is why I am getting ready to just give up on it. There hasn't been a single solution given that works. Not saying they aren't viable solutions since they have worked for others, but they just aren't working in my situation.

I am having the exact same problem and the solutions listed above did not work for me either. I am running Mandrake 9.2 & Mozilla 1.4. I have installed Mandrake 9.2 and Mozilla 1.4 on other systems and the flash plugin installed correctly without a hitch. The installer places the libflashplayer.so and flashplayer.xpt in the correct directories, but Mozilla will not recognize it. I have tried installing the plugin locally and globally as root, but the same problem exists. My installation of Mozilla does not have any problems recognizing any other plugins. Any other suggestions?

Thanks In Advance,
--Matt

PS: I have also tried installing the plugin for Opera and Foxfire and I get the exact same results.

Talking help is at hand if this dont work i dunno

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, I am about to give up. I went through and removed all the plugin files that the flash installer installs. logged in under my user account (not root this time) and then re-installed. went through just fine with no errors.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) check for a a folder called flash etc in (/usr/lib/flash) remove it completely

2 ) Uninstall all the plugins for flash completly from your /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins folder

3 ) remove all flash plugins from /home/(username)/.mozilla-1.4/plugins folder (if thats how your home directory path.

4) close down all your web browsers

5) login as root in command line then issue the comands to install your tarball or rpm flash kit

it should ask you where you want to install the plugins basically install it into your ROOT directory NOT your HOME directory so it sound be something like /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4

6) when setup is complete come out of command line and go into the /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins/ folder you should see all 3 plugins installed in their basically what you do is link those files over to your HOME mozilla plugins directory which i showed you up above . make sure it is a LINK and not a COPY

7) start up your web browser and check for the plugins by going to Help> About plugins

and it should list them all... just go to a flash site an check it out ... thats all their is to it if that don't work my name is not wisdom LOL good luck oh if you want more help just click here

Wisdom,

I followed your directions to a T and it still does not work. The plugins were installed into my /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4 as root (after I removed every instance of previous installations). I then linked those plugins to my home directory: ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins/libflashplugin.so /home/name/.mozilla/plugins. The links were listed under my local mozilla plugins directory, but still not showing up or working in mozilla.

Any other suggestions?

i had a similar problem with firebird, the plugin appeared in the correct directory but mozilla did not see it, i was missing a library package that the flash plugin needed, if you run ./mozilla in an xterm and then go to a flash page, it should dump out the error code and missing package name in the terminal, at least it did for me and i was then able to get it on rpmfind. good luck

do the linking of the files graphically as their is roughly 3 files to link into the folder the problem is that mostlikely somewhere you have files clashing against each other i was having the same exact problems and when i check the flash folder in /usr/lib and did a run the command for it to check it saw that files was clashing so somewhere on your pc you have some loose files thats clashing some how .. the insturctions given is what i did my self and now its working fine

dont give you as the same thing happen to me .. you must be doing somthing wrong at a point just try figure it out an it will work eventually Good luck

ps. i forgotten to tell you to delete the flash helper files from Edit> preferences>Alplication helper and then do the installation sorry about that

I am not familiar with linking files graphically. Could you please explain? Also, what is the 3rd file??? I only see two files, libflashplayer.so, flash*.xpt (sorry, I am not on a linux box right now). What is the 3rd file?

--Thanks,
Matt

If everything fails, here's the ultimate solution that won't fail:

Download Mozilla. Untar and install it in the user directory (/home/user). Install as user. Then follow my above suggestion on installing Flash.
