FireFox 3 using mailto:

Fc8, Firefox 3
When using File > Send Link in Firefox 2 it would open Thunderbird to send link,
but in Firefox3 the feature doesn't work.

In /,mozilla/firefox/default/user.js file, to select thunderbird, but it won't work in Firefox 3.
Below is contents of user.js

user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mailto","/usr/bin/thunderbird");
user_pref("browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs", true);

What's different in FF3 ??

In Firefox 3 Edit > Preferences > Applications > mailto is set to Thunderbird but SendLink still won't work.

How did you install Firefox 3? Did you get the binaries from mozilla.com?

Don't know if it should make a difference but on my F9 mailto links open a TB compose box.

Mine didn't setup right in FC8, I had to enable mine using Gnome-control-center > Preferred Applications > Internet > Mail Reader and setting to Thunderbird Email.
And all works fine now.

Y'all might be interested in this thread about Firefox, Thunderbird, and mailto's on the Slackware forum.

In particular I have posted a solution in that thread in the form of a patch. The patch also adds Gmail support as well.

The old
Code:
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mailto","/usr/bin/thunderbird");
seems to be causing problems now in FF 3, so I suggest not using it for now.
