I don't think that you can enable automatic updates when you install Firefox via an RPM. In my preferences, the checkbox for allowing checks of updates to Firefox is disabled.

If you already had firefox 1.5.x you should not need to update via rpm. Automatic update is one of the main features of version 1.5
The "check for updates" box will be disabled as user. To update you have to be root.

Although this seems to be the case, I checked for updates (using firefox version 1.5.0.2, as root) and it said that no updates were available. Are you mistaken, or is this just a bug on my system?

Under Preferences -> Advanced -> Update section, there is an option to allow check a checkbox for updates to firefox.

I use firefox downloaded from mozilla.com, and put it into /usr/local, it updated automatically, and I don't have to download the whole rpm. (also i've flash on my 64bit system, with 32bit firefox )

Ehhh....

Listen,
I have the feeling I play the dumb here, but I can't get Firefox to install on my system. I downloaded firefox 1.5.0.3 from mozilla.org and after I untar the package I copy the contents into /usr/local/lib/firefox-1.5.0.3/. I also made a copy of the executables into /usr/local/bin.

I restarted the system (for other reasons) and when I tried to call firefox :
Code:
/usr/local/bin/firefox
I get the answer:
Code:
/usr/local/lib/firefox-1.5.0.3/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries:
libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Before trying to download 17 MB of the RPM, doees anyone have any ideas? Because the installation instructions in the release notes of 1.5.0.3 from Mozilla aren't helping at all.

My specs:
Intel P4 processor
Fedora 4 (kernel 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4) O/S

Thanx
Andreas

Here we go:

1) If you have Yumex, then pass to the 2nd step, if not:

open terminal, and install yumex (as root):

# yum -y install yumex

2) Bring up yumex (Apps->sys tools->yumex or K->system tools-> yumex)

after refreshing all repos, go to update section, type in search box:

compat-libstdc, and check all found ones, then add to queue-> queue-> run queue.

3) Its best to put your firefox in /usr/local/firefox/, and then create symbolic links to your /usr/local/bin folder:

# ln -s /usr/local/firefox/firefox /usr/local/bin/

4) After that, try to open firefox as regular user, and if everything is ok, create your menu items, etc.

Also you can install java, flash, etc. and even can update your firefox, cause I guess you untared it by regular user.

And also run firefox, instead of firefox-bin.

Good luck!

P.S. You can give try for Fedora 5, how can u use system, knowing that there is newer one ?!

Cheers.

Oh....by the way...changing the operating system twice a year is too much fuss for nothing. I will wait for a while until there is a good reason to upgrade my OS. I 've done this in the past and changed from Red Hat 7.3 to 8.0, then to SuSE 8.1 and follwing Fedora 1, then 2 and then 4.
I feel I need a little time to to actual work with my pc instead of installing OSes all the time.

Anyway Fedora 6 will probably come up around October...so why hurry???
