Most BIOS run a Power On Self-Test (POST) before they try to boot, and the POST usually verifies most of the m/b functions.

(Although one of my systems has a "blown" sound system on the m/b, but it boot with no complaint after I added an after-market PCI sound card. So maybe the POST just checks for available systems. I suppose it depends on the BIOS specifics.)
