Fedora Rawhide Nvidia problem
 
Hello,

I am having an issue getting Fedora Rawhide working with my GTX 470. The nouveau driver works, but the performance is really slow, so I am trying to install the official Nvidia driver, but it is not working. I can install the Nvidia driver using either RPMFusion, or the one downloaded from their website, but after installation all I get when GDM tries to start is a black screen and a cursor in the shape of an X. I have disabled nouveau, but this does not solve the issue. I have also tried starting my session from the command line with startx, but the same problem occurs.

you are aware that rawhide is the testing version of the NEXT fedora " Fedora 19"
but you have a ALPHA testing ONLY fedora 20 kernel release candidate 4

a question where did you get xorg from ?

it says that it was built on CentOS 6


and a alpha testing only "fc20"

it is no wounder that the nvidia.run will not work


did you uninstall or blacklist "nouveau"
then rebuild the boot image ( without "nouveau")
then install the .run

This is a fresh install using Fedora 18 netinstall media. I followed these steps from the official Fedora wiki. Here is a link to the article https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Relea...ide?rd=Rawhide.

Point installer to Rawhide

You can sometimes install Rawhide by using a stable install media and pointing it to the Rawhide repository for packages to install.

    Download the latest stable or branched install media. (netinstall or DVD install)
    Copy to local media (USB or DVD or CD)
    Boot media and go to the 'Install Source' section and manually enter:
    https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/development/rawhide/x86_64/os/
    (or i386 for 32bit)
    Finish the install as normal.

For this method to work, there should be no major changes in Rawhide that the installer is not ready for, such as packages it depends on being retired or other similar situations.

It installed fine using this method, xorg was installed from there. I also am confused as to why I have any Fedora 20 packages, it appears that Rawhide repo has a mix of fc20 and fc19 packages right now. As I also thought Rawhide currently was just Fedora 19. Should I just try reinstalling, but point towards the 19 repo, as 19 is what I want? Reinstalling would be no problem at this point.

Alright, I just did a reinstall, this time using the Fedora 19 repo. It installed just fine, and this time the Nvidia drivers are working! After installing Fedora 19 from the development repo, I followed these steps to install the Nvidia driver http://www.if-not-true-then-false.co...-nvidia-guide/, just replacing the RPMFusion repo with the branched version for Fedora 19. I then restored the graphical boot with these instructions http://www.lucidelectricdreams.com/2...h-boot-in.html.

this is a very normal behivior for the development testing only "rawhide"

Rawhide is the development version
by definition it normal dose not work well .

right now fedora 18 is current
fedora 19 , is the next version.It has been frozen and is in beta testing

So "rawhide is NOW the Pre-ALPHA/ALPHA ( very early testing of the next after 19) fedora 20

things will NOT work ,they need testing and bug fixes submitted

things like a unsupported kernel and xorg are a very common issue

A "ALPHA" testing version , by definition
" sort of works on the developers machines ( maybe ) but might not even run on other hardware

software might not even work ( like the propitiatory nvidia drivers )


this is very normal for a testing only early development version .
