yes, recompiling is a good wayto do it.
Another (much more easier) way is to go to this page

Download the rpms for your kernel. And read the link Instructions on how to install support for NTFS. It will take you about 5 minutes and you will be able to read the files from NTFS. However writing to NTFS is still not possible in Linux (well you can try, but no guaranties are here
