Google led me to this thread. After booting from a Debian-based live USB, I "sudo -s" to root before running "dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda bs=440 count=1" to remove the Master Boot Code while leaving the Partition Table alone, but this command did nothing ("0 bytes copied").

Has someone seen this, knows the cause, and some possible cure?

For those interested, the right command appears to be "if=/dev/zero", not "if=/dev/null".
