Fedora Login missing after apache/zend server installation

Hi Guys,

I am new to Linux.
I installed some weeks ago Fedora 14 via burnt iso file downloaded from official Fedora site. It was working perfectly like a charm for me until yesterday when I tried to install zend server for PHP.
During my first try of installation of zend server it corrupted out my apache server and I lost apache on http://localhost.

I removed all "zend-server" like stuff from "Add Remove Software" screen.
Installed again apache 2 in the form of LAMP (Linux Apache Mysql Php) via terminal. Apache installed correctly and started workeing again ok on localhost. Then again I tried to install zend server from install.sh file in downloaded zend server installation. It showed me after a while like "zend server installed successfully".
I shut down my pc thinking everything is ok now.

Today when I started my system, it shows me boot screen of Fedora, I select fedora and then it shows me baloon filling up for around 5-7 secs. Then all of a sudden a black screen appears up with a cursor blinking at its top left and then nothing else happens further. I cannot find login screen to my desktop anymore.

I remember one thing that during reinstallation of apache from terminal, I set following command like "chkconfig --level 235 httpd" (I guess that's what I have written as per some online tutorial for LAMP). Is that cause of mine problem ot its something else?

Please sorry for this extra and long detail. But I wanted to show you guys the correct scenario going on at my end.
Please suggest me what should I do now as I am stucked and cant loose/reinstall my all installed software in fedora.
Thanks

Hi topgun743,

Next time you boot your system and the Fedora baloon appears, hit the Esc key that should take you to the terminal screen. Hopeful from there you may gain more answers to your current issue. Can you boot from a DVD - CDROM (of the FC14)? from here you may be able to correct your issue!!

Hi 1jnike,
I have tried what you said and pasting here a few lines of output on my console screen:

Starting cups: [FAILED]
Starting HAL daemon [OK]
Retrigger failed udev events [OK]
Enablibg blue tooth devices:
Starting xinetd [OK]
Heartbeat not configured: /etc/ha.d/ha.cf not found
Heartbeat failure [re:1] failed
Starting sendmail: [FAILED]
Starting sm-client [FAILED}
Starting abrt daemon [FAILED}
Starting httpd [FAILED}
Starting PostgreSQL.8.4:
waitng for server to start.....done
server started
PostgreSQL.8.4 started successfully
Starting crond: [OK]
Enabling monthly Smolt checking: [OK]
Starting atd: [OK]
Starting jexec services

-

Well that's the output till which I get and then it hangs up.
Also you said about DVD. Well yes I have it i.e Fedora 14. But I do not know exactly what to with it.

Now dears can I expect any resolution. Please have some detail because I am a newbie. Thanks

Hi topgun743,

I not sure the system is hanging at this stage, of your output as indicated,

<snip>
waitng for server to start.....done
server started
PostgreSQL.8.4 started successfully
Starting crond: [OK]
Enabling monthly Smolt checking: [OK]
Starting atd: [OK]
Starting jexec services

<snip end>

The system seems still to be booting up. How long do you wait while the system displays a blank screen, just flashing cursor?

By booting the system from the DVD-CD-ROM, you may be able to login to your current system, as root from a terminal prompt, than remove the software packages, that may have caused your system fault!!

Hi 1jnike,

<snip>
waitng for server to start.....done
server started
PostgreSQL.8.4 started successfully
Starting crond: [OK]
Enabling monthly Smolt checking: [OK]
Starting atd: [OK]
Starting jexec services
<snip end>

Right after "Starting jexec services" line the system displays just a blank screen with a flashing cursor. It does not proceed any further after that. Means I cant do anything after that.

I have tried to login to my system using Fedora 14 Live DVD, but it is not showing my previous start menu options and I am not sure if it contains my previous data in my /home,/var,/usr directories. I guess its asking me to do a fresh installation again but that way I may even loose my data plus my previously installed all software, which I don't want at least.

If there is anything I can do with my Live DVD regarding restore of my system, please can you explain this in a bit detail.

Many thanks for your time.

Hi topgun743,

I am having the same problem on Fedora 13 with it freezing at Start jexec services.
Did you find a solution?
If so, what?

Thanks.

topgun743 01-20-2011 12:11 PM

proengin,

No luck yet. I guess its getting harder for me to carry on with fedora, if I cant find any sol to it.

hi topgun,

have you tried to login in single usermode,
after login via singleuser,check the services
/sbin/chkconfig --list

check anything related to jexec
stop the service.And give a try

proengin 01-21-2011 08:44 AM

topgun,

I gave up trying things and backed up my data then reinstall Fedora 14.
Everything is working fine now.

Hi appilu,

I did what you said. Deleted jexec services from /sbin/chkconfig file. Gave it a try again but nothing good happened.
So I abandoned my idea of fixing my old fedora.
Instead I used my DVD Live. Booted into the system, backedup my old work and then reinstalled fedora 14.
I had to spend my last night bringing it to my previous state of fedora and yes it paid off.

I have also decided not to make any software run with some init level setting in some system configuration file, as this was the blunder that I did last time. I guess its better to manually start some service after login given you are not easy with Linux as a novice.

Now everything is ok and with the hope it won't crash again. Anyways thanks for your help. :)
