Ok after browing the web, I've been able to switch to run level 3, so I dont have this respawning too fast message. I see that there are some errors in the kernel, but I dont know what to do for that.
So now i'm running under level 3, after all the boot process, I have the login prompt and I am able to login under my user accounts (and root) and I see all the files and can access them. Everything is fine! Except no more GUI! Gone ! Is there a way I can get GUI back (like GNOME and KDE) ? Thx! Max |
Oops, someone else will have to help you get X back.
I am using ud2date on my FC1 install. I changed the mirrors per the instructions on http://www.fedora.us/wiki/FedoraHOWTO I am sticking with the stable and also added the line[ yum fedora-us-updates-fc1 http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fed...86/yum/updates ]so as to include those update packages. I suppose the really adventurous are using the testing and unstable also but.... Using the up2date gives you an icon on the taskbar and the rest is pretty much click and drool, the way I like it. |
Hey, thx for the info!
Well if I'm able to get it back, well I'll have a look at these urls! In the mean time, I stick to windows! But monday I'll try the suggestion of putting the first CD and try to fix it with it by upgrading.. If it works that would be fine, otherwise.. maybe a complete reinstall but I don't wanna think about it now! Max |
Ok I tried to "upgrade" with the CDs but nothing much changed. So I just reinstalled it over and its works as before! Now I done multiple partitions such as home in case this crash again!

I was having the same issue with up2date hanging at random places and xfer speed never got above 8kB/sec.. I used apt and it worked great.
Download the FC1 Apt RPM: http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp....1.fr.i386.rpm Then: % rpm -Uvh apt-0.5.15cnc3-0.1.fr.i386.rpm % apt-get update % apt-get dist-upgrade --- http://freshrpms.net/apt/ |
Thx carbonlogic for ur message.
I started a yum list to get the headers, and I dont know why but my internet was so unstable (had to go deactivate/activate my eth0 every 5 minutes..!) anyways during that yum update, my computer froze AGAIN! this was like the 3-4th time today! It never froze before (well once when I lost my GUI) so I dont know why its crashing for no special reason! I have to do a hard restart, check everything, almost everything is fine I guess and crash after a while! Its not Windows !! Common! What is the possible source of problem? Cause after the bug I encountered, I repartitioned over it with Fedora (DRUID I think), made a /boot, /, /home and a swap partitions, reinstall fully Fedora Core 1 and everything runs fine. Except I crash all the time.. Thx! Max |
Ok I hope this thread is close to an end ;-) I did change the file used for up2date, did 1 update instead of the 83 announced under the redhat servers (dunno why!??) and now I did play with my eth0 (maybe thats the source of all the crashes..!) running AMSN, having fun under linux, even having a weather report telling me its -4C, so all is perfect now ;-)
Happy Linux Member! Max |
OK one day after and only happy experiences on Fedora ;-) Not bad uh!
Following the information (along with the urls you all gave me), I did set up correctly the file source used for up2date, saw again the 83 updates available, did in 3 shot a total of 64 updates, I encountered NO problems at all! Now when I boot, I see a new entry in the grub loader. I thinks its a newer version of the kernel, correct me if I am wrong. Do I need to keep the older one? If not, how can I remove it (must be a line into a file right) ? Thx! Thats almost it for this thread, since it was for up2date and that now it is working perfect! Thx again to everyone! |
Ok just edited the grub.conf, comment out the older kernel, I think its fine!
