Fedora Core Problem: KDE and /mnt
 

I have installed Fedora Core 3 and all went well. I chose the personal desktop installation and chose to install the default selected items. GNOME was the desktop defaultly selected. Now i have confronted two problems seriously.

1. I have installed KDE but i don't know how to get into it. Everytime Fedora boots and goes into GNOME all by itself. Plz tell how to get into KDE.

2. I have dual boot with WinXP and Fedora Core 3. Previously i had installed Mandrake 10.0 and Mandrake was able to look into windows directories through /mnt. But i cannot look into windows through Fedora Core. Fedora do have /mnt directory but it is empty. Plz help me solve this problem bcz i have mp3 songs in E: drive of windows and they amount to about 13 GB. I cannot just copy them in Fedora to use.

1. It's easy, you can simply choose the GUI Linux session in the screen before you log-in.... Well, of course you must have installed the KDE first before you log into the session.

2. You can simply just update your /etc/fstab for everything. Someone made a good manual that actually works. Read it here: http://fedoranews.org/blog/?p=676

I have installed KDE package when i was in GNOME session because it was the only one available session at that time. However, when i rebooted, it didn't ask me whether to get into GNOME or KDE. Does that mean that KDE package was not installed properly.

Nope, the only thing it tells you is that the last session you used was Gnome.
To enter KDE from the login screen, click on a button called "sessions" and select KDE. You will then be asked if you want it as the default desktop.
After that you will get into KDE until you change it.

Personally, I would also ensure to install KDM and get rid of GDM, so that you get the full power of KDE.
If it's your computer and you don't mind whether other people can use your box (i.e. it's your box at home), once in KDE open the KDE Control Center > System Administration > Login Manager > Convenience. Get root clicking on "Administrator mode" and writing your password. Now check "Enable Auto-Login" and select your default user from the drop-down menu. You can also set you default user to not need a password to log in.
What you get with this is that you won't need to use the login prompt, after booting you will find yourself in KDE w/o delay.

This isn't specially dangerous, as long as you don't set root to be a password less user and make auto-login.
