you couldn't. You need to install a current distro, and for fedora that'd be fedora 15. You could try just getting the RPM from getfirefox.com. but fc7???? really???

on fedora 7 ?

You DO NOT - 7 is long dead.
I do not even think 7 can run the old ff3 - you might be stuck with ff2

You install the current Fedora 15 THEN by hand install the prebuilt ff5 from firefox
and configure all the plugins also by hand .

I am now trying to install fedoraa core 15 and I am using an external cdrom dvd with usb and I am getting the message 0-1864444 trying to unpack rootfs as intramfs this stays at this line for about five minutes and than the monitor goes blank and will not respond. Is there a possiblity the external cdrom is causing this?

Did you check the burned disk?

What is specs of computer?

I'd consider FF6 while you are at it.

The disk appears to be good no scratches. The computer is a compaq evo d300 with 500 mb ram.

I expect the above is a least part of the problem. If you go to the Fedora site below, you will see that minimum RAM for GUI is 640MB with 1152MB recommended:

I'm afraid it may be time for you and Fedora to part company. The installer simply won't work on smaller computers any more. You could always get the DVD and choose a non-graphical install, but then you'd be left with a CLI system and having to set up X and a desktop manually.

You would probably be better off with an Xfce desktop (which is closer to the Gnome you're used to than the new Gnome 3 would be). Try the Xfce version of Mint. That will run in 256MB, so it would be very responsive on your computer. You'll be abandoning yum for apt-get, but there's always a downside.

500 meg ram ?? should it not be 512 meg ?

cent5.6 will install and maybe cent6 ( unknown on 6 )

but not mush will run well with only 512 meg of ram
i would not even attempt to run ff6 or 5

stick with what is in any distro you do get to install

640 is the very very bare min.
and might not install gnome3
KDE or xfce yes , but 3 dose require more system resources

on a box with less than 1 gig i would install CentOS6 and might use xfce and not use Gnome

but you could always do a text install
then do a groupinstall with yum
Code:
yum grouplist
yum groupinstall " It's Name in quotes "
something like " Gnome Desktop Environment"

This is line that it is getting stuck at "0-1864444 trying to unpack rootfs as intramfs".The installation program will not go any further.
